McDonald's design system for digital products

McDonald's is the world's second largest private employer with 1.6 million employees. Now imagine what just one additional minute of work makes to its bottom line.

Visual language is just like any other language. If the language is not shared and understood by everyone using it — misunderstandings arise quickly. And as a product or team grows, the challenges compound.

The benefits design systems are clear — a cohesive experience is more easily understood by our users, saving time and ultimately money on essential tasks employees have to do daily.

A very notable example of McDonald's internal applications before a comprehensive design system was put into practice. This application was used by global McDonald's staff to report and keep track of incidents in all of 36,900 restaurants. It was not, obviously, in line with McDonald's brand guidelines and the way staff filled in all the necessary details was extremely time consuming. It took an average of 14 minutes to report just one incident.

One incident report that previously took 14 minutes to complete was down to just 8. Multiply that by 1.6 million and just imagine what a time saver that is.
